About the Maasai of Kenya

The Maasai are a semi-nomadic people of the Great Rift Valley and savanna regions of southern Kenya and northern Tanzania — one of Africa’s most recognisable and culturally rich communities.

Known for their vivid red shukas, elaborate beadwork jewellery, and the spectacular adamu jumping dance, the Maasai have maintained many of their ancient traditions in the modern world. A visit to a Maasai boma (homestead) is one of Kenya’s most meaningful cultural experiences.

Photography

Always ask permission before photographing individuals. A small tip is appropriate — your guide will advise. Never photograph without consent.

Buying Crafts

Buy directly from the women's cooperative. Prices are agreed in advance — bargaining is not appropriate in community cooperatives.

Gifts

Do not bring sweets or small gifts for children — it can create dependency. Instead, the community fee you pay supports education and healthcare directly.
